Preparing for Winter

Fall is approaching but it’s not too late to make changes to cut your winter fuel costs. Many changes are quick, easy and inexpensive but can make a big difference in both your comfort this winter and in your fuel costs.

Why not start with your windows and doors? Are they drafty? Easy weatherstripping around them and plastic seals over the windows and unused doors can really make a difference.

Many older Maine homes have rooms that are not over a foundation and the cold wind and snow can blow right under those rooms making them hard to keep warm. The best way to keep these rooms warm is to install 2" of foam insulation to the inside of skirting that encloses the space between the floors and the ground. Plastic sheeting across the ground and up the inside of the skirting will provide a vapor and moisture barrier.
